Big Bear's Boxing Legacy

The Summit Gym

Perched high in the mountains of Big Bear Lake, California, Munguia Summit is more than just a retreat—it's a historic and active landmark in the world of boxing. Originally conceived and built by legendary trainer Abel Sanchez, and now owned by professional boxer Jaime Munguía, this property has been a training sanctuary for some of the greatest fighters in the sport. Today, while it has evolved into a luxurious getaway, it remains a premier training destination for professional fighters.

A Gym That Continues to Forge Champions

In the early 1990s, Abel Sanchez had a vision: to create a high-altitude training camp where boxers could push their limits away from distractions. He found the perfect location in Big Bear Lake, a peaceful, high-altitude environment nearly 7,000 feet above sea level—ideal for increasing endurance and mental fortitude.

The Summit Gym, built on the property, quickly became a world-renowned training ground. Gennady “GGG” Golovkin, one of the most dominant middleweight champions in history, was among the elite fighters who made this their training home. Golovkin spent years preparing for fights at Munguia Summit, crediting the grueling workouts and altitude training for his incredible stamina and knockout power. He wasn’t alone—several other world-class fighters, including Oscar De La Hoya, Terry Norris, Murat Gassiev, and other top contenders, trained here, making it a legendary part of boxing history.

But the legacy doesn’t stop there. The Summit Gym is still in use today, with professional fighters training here daily. The gym remains consistently active, hosting dedicated athletes pushing their limits in preparation for upcoming bouts. The altitude, seclusion, and top-tier facilities make it an ideal location for fighters looking to refine their craft and condition their bodies for championship fights.

The Unique Advantages of Training in Big Bear

What makes Munguia Summit such a special place for fighters? The altitude. Training in Big Bear forces boxers to adapt to thinner air, strengthening their lungs and increasing their endurance—giving them a decisive edge in the ring. The isolation also plays a key role; fighters can focus entirely on their craft without the distractions of big cities.

Summit Gym isn’t just about conditioning—it’s about fostering a champion’s mentality. Fighters who train here don’t just work on their technique; they embrace the struggle, the discipline, and the relentless pursuit of greatness. It’s a place where world titles are won before the fight ever takes place. With the gym still actively used today, its reputation as a proving ground for elite fighters continues.

A Legendary Space That Doubles as an Exclusive Retreat

While Munguia Summit is still a premier training hub for boxers, it also serves as a high-end mountain retreat for those looking to experience a piece of boxing history. However, the Summit Gym is private and not accessible to guests—it remains an exclusive training space for professional fighters.

Guests can still stay in the same rooms where champions once rested, walk the same paths where they ran, and take in the same inspiring mountain views that fueled some of the greatest athletes in the sport.

The property itself offers a unique blend of history and comfort:

  • Proximity to Snow Summit: Just two blocks away, offering both summer and winter outdoor activities.

  • Spacious Accommodations: Featuring five bedrooms and four bathrooms, comfortably hosting up to 12 guests.

  • Game Room & Entertainment Space: A relaxing way to unwind after a day of exploration.

  • Expansive Outdoor Space: Over half an acre of land, providing both privacy and breathtaking scenery.
